Reading
At Plaistow Hill we love to read! Each day the children take home books to share. One book is taken from a wide selection of colour banded books from reading schemes such as Oxford Reading Tree, with a second book selected from our wonderful library. Children also take home a RWI book linked to the group they are in.
We really value the importance of reading at home and we encourage all of our children to share as many books at home as they can. This can be reading to someone, reading with someone or having someone read to them. Any time they can share some reading, whether they are reading or being read to is so important. And don't forget, reading doesn't just have to be a story! It can be leaflets, signs, recipes, anything that encourages reading!
Below are some suggested reading texts for children. Why don't you try reading some with your child at home.
At Plaistow Hill we celebrate the reading of all of our children. If the children read at least 3 times in a week for 10, 20 and then 30 weeks, they receive a special bronze, silver or gold badge in assembly which they can then wear on their school jumpers to show they have been working hard on their reading.
In addition to all of this we have strong links with our newly refurbished local library and take part in reading challenges throughout the school year. We also have visits from one of the librarians to our assemblies during the year to keep the profile of reading high.
